North East Activities for Adults
With its amazing scenery, spectacular coastline, and bustling towns and cities there’s always something new to discover in the North East. While there’s plenty of fun things to do with kids in the area there are also plenty of activities for adults and big kids to enjoy. Whether you prefer an evening out in the heart of the city, a gentle stroll along the coast, or something more adventurous, we’ve put together eight of our favourite North East activities for adults.
Spot a future comedy star
The Stand Comedy Club in the heart of Newcastle city centre is open 7 days a week and as well as featuring big name touring comedians it also has regular weekly shows highlighting beginner and up and coming acts. Events usually sell out so make sure you book in advance and seating is unreserved so arrive early unless you are happy to stand in the bar area! The Stand encourage a friendly and supportive atmosphere and stag and hen groups are not permitted, making it a relaxed night out for couples or small groups.
Take in the views from Souter Lighthouse and The Leas
The historic Souter Lighthouse, opened in 1871, was the first UK lighthouse to be designed to be powered by electricity. North of the lighthouse itself The Leas is a spectacular two mile stretch of limestone cliffs and rocky bays. Dogs are welcome in the lighthouse grounds and in the cafe. There is also a well-stocked second hand bookshop to browse through with all proceeds going towards the upkeep of the lighthouse.
Experience the coast like never before
Explore the beautiful coastline of the North East on a breathtaking coasteering adventure. Swim, jump, climb and scramble your way across coves, cliffs and sandy beaches with our experienced local instructors. Suitable for all levels of adventurer our coasteering activity takes place at Marsden beach, a hidden gem in South Shields with its imposing rock formations. Wetsuits and safety equipment are all provided.
Refresh and refuel
If you fancy relaxing with some tasty food and drink after your costal adventure then head a couple of miles down the coast to the Stack Seaburn shipping container village. With social bench seating and a choice of bars and entertainment it’s a great place to enjoy a friendly North East night out. There’s a wide range of different street food vendors so everyone can eat what they like, or you can be adventurous and attempt to try them all!
Experience the ancient spirit of hospitality
The unique Ad Gefrin is an Anglo-Saxon museum and whisky distillery in the heart of Northumberland. Take a step back in time and learn about the rich history and largely untold stories of the kings and queens of the Kingdom of Northumbria at the royal palace of Gefrin. Then visit the distillery for a guided tour and tasting experience and find out how traditional methods are combined with the latest technology by a skilled team of distillers.
Solve a Murder
There’s no shortage of escape rooms to try across the North East, but some of the most creative adventures can be found at the Northumberland Escape Rooms in the pretty Northumberland market town of Morpeth. Enter through the bright yellow door opposite the clock tower and challenge yourself to either solve a classic murder mystery, retrieve a stolen magic book, or escape from Wonderland. There’s plenty of cafes and restaurants nearby for refreshments once you’ve made it out.
Watch art being made
Sunderland has a rich glass making heritage which you can explore at the National Glass Centre on the banks of the River Wear. Entry is free and as well as regular exhibitions there is a changing programme of events showcasing modern and contemporary work. Don’t miss the daily live glass making demonstrations in the Hot Glass Studio where you can experience the heat of the 1000 degree furnace and watch skilled glass makers craft pieces before your eyes. Or if you want to get more hands on you can book an introductory class and create your own work of art.
Eat your way around the North East
