Unusual things to do in the North East
With its rich history and spectacular scenery, the North East is a bit of an undiscovered gem. If you’re lucky enough to be visiting, there’s no shortage of exciting activities, fun days out, and unexpected places to explore. Here are just some of our favourite unusual things to do in the North East that you might not have heard of.
Stargazing
Northumberland has the lowest levels of light pollution in England, making it one of the best places in the country for stargazing. On a clear night ,wrap up warm with binoculars and a hot drink and experience the wonder of a sky filled with billions of stars. The longer autumn and winter nights are best for stargazing and the Kielder Observatory holds regular events where expert astronomers will help you navigate the skies and journey through the stars.
The Alnwick Poison Garden
Head north to the pretty town of Alnwick where, among some better known attractions, you’ll also find the deadliest garden in England. Filled with plants so dangerous some are kept in cages, the Poison Garden itself is locked behind ornate black iron gates and only accessible by guided tour. Remember, look, but don’t touch!
Coasteering
With its long sandy beaches, craggy outcrops, secret coves, and spectacular views, the North East coastline is stunning. One of the best ways to explore it is with one of our enthusiastic and experienced outdoor instructors on a coasteering adventure. Join us for an adrenaline packed experience as you swim, jump, climb and scramble your way along the coast.
The Bowes Museum
Set in beautiful grounds, the French-style Bowes Museum houses a whole host of unusual exhibitions and events. It’s easy to spend a whole day here just wandering through the art and design collections and exploring the woodland walks. Don’t miss the famous 250-year-old mechanical Silver Swan, which performs daily at 2pm.
Public Art
The countryside of the North East is dotted with public art sculptures. The most famous being the Angel of the North (which is worth a visit) but there are numerous other less well known treasures that can be found. With a bit of planning and research you can seek out unusual secrets such as the Cramlington Giant Spoon, Saltburn ‘Charm Bracelet’, Peterlee boxing gloves, and the original Iron Man puppet. Or enjoy a day out following the Amble Bord Walk with its 16 unique artworks inspired by birds.
Take to the water
One of the most delightful ways to experience the historic city of Durham is from the water. Brown’s Rowing Boats has been hiring out its traditional hand built rowing boats since the 1900s. Hire one and enjoy a leisurely row along the river, admiring the views and spotting wildlife. Or, if you prefer sitting back and letting someone else steer the boat, you can enjoy a trip on their river cruiser along with commentary and drinks.
High Force Waterfall
One of the most spectacular waterfalls in England, the 21-metre high cascade of High Force is a sight not to be missed. There is also an App available to download with walking routes and information about the wildlife and history of the area. For the thrill seekers who want to do more than just look at the falls you can book one of our Hydrospeeding experiences and shoot off along the water.
Walk under the city
Hidden under the streets of Newcastle is a 19th-century wagonway with a fascinating history. Daily guided tours will take you through the atmospheric Victoria tunnel while sharing stories of its past. There are also regular events held in the tunnel, including music performances and wine tastings!
Or get a birds eye view
St James’ Park in the heart of the city is best known as the home of Newcastle United football club. For those less interested in football but with a good head for heights the stadium also offers rooftop tours where you can experience some amazing panoramic views of Tyneside including some of the region's most prominent landmarks.
Visit a haunted castle
The North East has no shortage of castles, including the medieval Chillingham Castle, famous for being Britain's most haunted castle! Visit during the day to explore the castle and grounds and then - if you’re feeling brave - return in the evening for a ghost hunt. You can even stay overnight in one of the castle’s apartments and explore the extensive grounds at your leisure.
